Plymstock United 0 Sidmouth Town 1

SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 11th January

With a four week break due to the recent bad weather Town managed to claim three points in what was a dour match in Plymouth. On a heavy pitch both sides struggled to overcome the boggy conditions. The first half saw few chances with Plymstock causing danger from set pieces. Town looked leggy & found it difficult to keep possession even under no pressure from their opponents. Jack Burgess again showed great handling skills helping his defence in an even first half. The Vikings looked better after the interval, showing a bit more urgency and creativity. Dan Tavender was leading by example tackling himself to a standstill whilst on the opposite flank Greg Chaplin was causing the United defence plenty of problems. Town needed to realise that playing through the middle of the pitch in sticky conditions was never going to bring any reward. Basic understanding of football should of seen the ball played wide as much as possible, unfortunately Town only realised this in the final third of the game! The winning goal came from Tavender who, after collecting the ball wide, dummied to pass inside and opened a huge space for himself to attack from the edge of the box smashing an unstoppable right foot shot into the roof of the net. Now they had something to defend a more resolute Viking side appeared. Burgess bravely punched away from a rare United chance, gaining a bang on his eye for his efforts. Town created further chances but couldn’t add the killer second goal. With injury time approaching Burgess pulled off a double save which ensured all three points for the Vikings.

Paddy comments: It wasn’t pretty to watch in what were difficult conditions. Our recent inactivity played a part but that shouldn’t affect the basics of our game. A clean sheet is always pleasing and I am sure the players will know that we need to improve on this showing. Unfortunately we have a free weekend next Saturday 18th January. The 2nd team play Axminster Reserves home on this date 2.15 ko.
The following week 25th Jan, the First team play Axminster away 2.15 ko at Colyton Grammar School
