Sidmouth Town 2nds 6 Axmouth United 1

Bill Slee Cup

With the 1st team having a free week and the unavailability of 2nd team Manager Simon Hudson, this game gave 1st team Manager Josh Stunell & his assistant John Clements the ideal opportunity to check upon the progress of the talented reserve side and neither of them were to be disappointed.

Sidmouth a league above their visitors who had a number of players who had Devon & Exeter Premier Division experience in their side, took the initiative early by passing the ball well and keeping shape.  For all of the Vikings possession they failed to threaten the Axmouth gloves man until the 25th minute when the rapid Ferenc Bodor was put through by Damien Armes.  The winger made no mistake with the finish 1-0.  Sidmouth didn’t really get out of first gear for the remainder of the half and this gave the visitors some encouragement and only some smart goal keeping from Dec Lines allowed Sidmouth to go into the break with the lead.

Half time 1-0

Sidmouth started the half with a spring in their step and soon found themselves scoring a second again Bodor escaped his marker and when left with just the keeper to beat he smashed his shot home 2-0.  On the 55th minute Bodor hit a terrific shot on the half volley from wide right, this time his shot hit the far post and rebounded to safety.  Had that got in it would have been a goal of the season contender.  On the 65th Minute Bodor did get his hatrick, Bodor raced away from the Axmouth backline and took full advantage of the woeful defending and easily placed the ball past the visiting keeper. 3-0.

Axmouth did manage to pull a goal back on the 68th minute a poor back pass was seized upon and Daniel Reynolds managed to bundle the ball into the goal. 3-1.  On the 70th minute Sidmouth introduced the spritely Mike Stamp who made an immediate impact, scoring two goals in quick succession.  5-1.  The icing was put on the cake in the 85th minute when 16 year old youth team player Joe Miller scored having ghosted in at the back post to finish off a crossed ball.  Miller has featured twice for the 1st team this year and would have been delighted to have got his first goal in senior football.

Final Score 6-1

Josh said “I was really impressed today with the mental strength and determination of the team.  I felt that we were very much coasting and at halftime I instructed the side to raise their games by sharpening up their passing and doing things much quicker.  I felt they were taking Axmouth to lightly.  To be fair to a man they listened, hence the final score being as it was.  I felt Damien Armes showed some good qualities holding the midfield together.  His midfield partner Matt Ogley also shone to the point where the 16 year old midfielder ran the game for large spells, Stamp was a handful as was Bodor, who scored three goals but I still believe he can do more and should have scored five!!!
