University 0 Sidmouth Town 3

Carlsberg SWPL Division 1 East Monday 17th August

Monday gave Sidmouth the chance to put the disappointment of Saturdays defeat behind them when they travelled to Exeter University. Sidmouth had a dream start when Ashley Small went down the wing and his cross was headed in off the bar by Cameron Vere after just 17 seconds. 0-1.

Sidmouth found conditions more favourable since the pitch suited their slick passing game. Sidmouth continued their free flowing play with debutant Ryan Davies pulling the strings in the middle of the park but they lacked the final killer ball. Uni, well known for their fitness and skilful play, came back into the game but the young Viking defence held firm. Uni had a clear cut chance to level things up but Jamie Newbery athletically blocked the shot with a diving header. Mid-way through the half another great cross from Small was fired home at the back post by Vere to give Sidmouth a two goal lead. 0-2. Sidmouth created many chances before the end of the half but went in just two goals in front to the relief of the uni team.

Second half Sidmouth continued, and with the front line of Vere, Mark Pavey and Pitter, caused the home defence numerous problems. Uni began to maintain possession and as a result the midfield dropped deeper to deal with the opposing threat. From a Uni corner, Sidmouth broke away and were controversially awarded a penalty when Small admitted his legs had ‘turned to jelly’. Pitter tucked away the resulting penalty. 3-0. Uni pressed hard in the last ten minutes but the team held firm to keep a clean sheet and record an impressive victory. Man of the Match Ashley Small.
