Galmpton Utd 3 – 1 Sidmouth Town 1

SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 5th March 2016

The Vikings found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat to Galmpton Utd, however the score line does not tell the whole story as the home side were in debt to the inform former Hereford Utd professional goal keeper Kenny Griffiths who made a series of stunning saves and at critical times.

The 1st goal was scored inside the first 10 minutes of the game when debut teenager Curtis Clarke ghosted around Sidmouth’s right back Ben Farrington to tuck away a fine crossed ball.  The half was a fairly even affair with both home defences in good form in particular for Sidmouth the central defensive pairing of Jamie Newbery & Anthony Griffiths expertly marshalled Galmpton’s Dan Rankin & Matt Barkwell.

Half time 0-1

Sidmouth should have equalised within a minute of the restart when Cameron Vere failed to connect Ryan Davies defence splitting through ball, with only Griffiths to beat, Vere at full stretch somehow failed to make any contact to the ball, much to the relief of the home dugout.  On the 60th minute former Wales U19 keeper Griffiths dived at full length to tip a Jamie Orchard effort around the post (a shot that would have beaten any other keeper in the league).  Minutes later Griffiths was at it again, after a Vere deflected shot looked destined for the net the experienced custodian somehow recovered from being on the floor to dive backwards and hold the ball on the line. Moments later Orchard had thought he had scored but saw his shot cleared off the line by a recovering defender (goal line replay would have been interesting!).  Against the run of play Galmpton scored their second, great work by Clarke enabled Mark Newbold to slot past Sidmouth’s Jamie Harvey.  On the 75th minute Sidmouth had another goal bound effort cleared off the line and within four passes Clarke had the ball in the net again 0-3.

Sidmouth immediately introduced Olly Binion into midfield that on the day lacked some much needed energy due to Tyler Wellman & Connor Swingler missing the game, the relentless Binion started to cause problems and Sidmouth eventually beat Griffiths, Vere riffling home his 17th goal of the season.
