Newton Abbot Spurs 0 – Sidmouth Town 2

Carlsberg SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 19th March 2016

Sidmouth Town ended Newton Abbots excellent run of form that has seen them only suffer one defeat from their last seven games.  For the second week running the rejuvenated young Vikings set off at an electric pace, dominating possession throughout.  However the first real effort on goal was from the spurs when a ‘cheeky’ 15th minute curling effort that was heading for the top right hand corner of the goal was brilliantly tipped over to safety by goal keeper Dec Lines.  That was the home-sides only effort on goal as the visitors pushed the Spurs back inside their own half as they went looking for the opening goal.  Sidmouth were creating a lot of chances with Connor Swingler causing all kinds of problems for the exhausted blues.  However Sidmouth had to wait until the 40th minute to find the back of the net, Cameron Vere received a clever through ball from Dave Green, this allowed the clubs top marksman a free shot on goal.  Vere made no mistake with the finish, smashing the ball past Neil Comerford in the home goal.

Half time 0-1

Newton Abbot deserve a lot of credit as by half time they looked drained of energy and ‘there for taking’.  After a half time ‘rollicking’ they piled on the pressure.  Sidmouth showed some real quality in containing the Spurs, Jamie Newbery & Anthony Griffiths in central defence put on a masterclass in defending.  After dealing with heavy pressure for 15 minutes the youthfull Vikings side started to regain a foothold in the game with Ben Farrington putting a free-kick inches wide on the 68th minute.  The game was wrapped up on the 74th minute when Jamie Orchard scored his first goal for the club, the Devon U18 striker volleyed an effort from 25 yards out wide on the right hand side.  Orchards shot flew past Comerford into the top left hand corner of the goal. Orchards goal of the season contender understandably sparked off exuberant touchline celebrations from Sidmouth’s management who were delighted with the performance and result.

Fulltime 0-2
