University of Exeter 4 – Sidmouth Town 3.

Carlsberg SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 15th August 2017

Sidmouth started fairly well but it was the home side that took the lead on the 7th minute when Andy Farley punished some woeful defending, the Vikings seemed a little jaded and were soon to concede again when Bratt riffled a 20 yard free kick past the despairing dive of former Devon U18 keeper Josh Mclean. 2-0.  Sidmouth got marginally better but more school boy defending was on display and in the 34th minute prolific striker Sedgwick calmly rounded Mclean 3-0.

Sidmouth captain James Clampin received his marching orders on the 34th minute after an overzealous tackle on a one of the students.  This incident seemed to wake the travelling Vikings up as on the 39th minute they were awarded a free kick 30 yards out, the talented Jordan Bastin lofted a ball into the penalty area that deceived everyone and nestled into the top left hand corner of the goal.  3-1 Right on half time Bastin was at it again neatly finishing off a great team move 3-2.

Halftime 3-2

By the 65th minute with 10 men the Vikings looked the better side and it was only a matter of time before they equalised.  The match drew level on the 80th minute when teenager Jacob Rowe riffled home a free-kick 3-3.  Sidmouth pushed for the winner with Bastin, Antat and Small all coming close.  On the 85th minute Sidmouth were left heart broken, the Uni were awarded a dubious free kick 20 yards out from goal, the direct kick was un-characteristically fumbled by Mclean right into the path of the onrushing Bartley who made no mistake with the finish.  Mclean was injured in the phase of play, complaining of breathing difficulties the young custodian was checked over at Exeter A&E after the game, thankfully Mclean was given the all clear.

Final score 4-3
