Carlsberg SWPL Division 1 East Tuesday 29th August 2017
Honiton made the livelier start, but after the 1st ten minutes it was Sidmouth that started to stamp their authority. On the 20th minute Jordan Bastin went close with a headed effort. Sidmouth’s Ashley Small & Jonny Holding were causing the home defence some issues with their movement. Honiton always looked a threat on the counter attack, which needed Sidmouth’s Keeper Josh Mclean to be alert to sweep up any through balls.
Half time 0-0
The game came alive in the 2nd half with the home side picking up numerous bookings that kept the referee busy, one or two very borderline red card challanges went in from the battling Hippos. On the 65th minute a touch of sheer class from Honiton’s Ben Ede put the home side ahead, Ede spotted keeper Mclean off his line and subsequently hit a 35yard shot that flew over Mclean and into the net. 1-0. Ede wasn’t finished there and tried the same thing again 2 minutes later, fortunately for Sidmouth ede’s shot went wide. This was a wakeup call for Sidmouth and they started to get their act together again dominating possession but lacking the end product. Honiton still looking for the quick counter attack and twice found Mclean in great form saving two one-on-one situations. At the other end Matt Long in the Honiton goal was in sparkling form commanding his area with aplomb. The introduction of Sidmouth’s Connor Swingler on the 78th minute caused the Hippo’s numerous problems the fleet footed winger delivered several excellent crosses that rebounded off bodies in the home sides 18 yard box and narrowly bobbling wide. On the 85th minute the Vikings should have scored, again great work by Swingler found Small with the goal at his mercy, uncharacteristically Small blazed over.Final Score 1-0
