Carlsberg SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 30th September 2017
The Vikings travelled to North Devon with several key players missing (Rob Knight, Chris Duchenski, Connor Swingler and Dan Clay) and drafted in 2nd team players Russ Coombs, Will Jenkins, Ferenc Bodor & Ben Farrington to fill the void.
Both teams started reasonably well, with Bodor looking dangerous on the counter attack. Against the run of play Addledore scored when the Vikings failed to deal with a routine cross, goal timed at 11 minutes. Sidmouth dusted themselves down and on the 22nd minute got back on level terms when Jake Rowe weaved past two Appledore defenders and then expertly slotted home 1-1. Sidmouth went onto to create numerous good chances with Nathan Antat, Ashley Small and Bodor all being wasteful.
Half time 1-1
Sidmouth took the game to Appledore and on the 60th minute got their noses in front when Ashley Small deftly headed past the home goal keeper 1-2. By the 70th minute Sidmouth should have been out of sight but failed to take their chances and this enabled the oranges to stay in the game, on the 75th minute the home-side equalised through a terrific solo goal, the left winger picking up the ball duly skipped past three Sidmouth players and from a tight angle slotted past Josh Mclean. 2-2. On the 82nd minute Sidmouth scored a 3rd goal. Dan Evans scoring a fabulous goal from 20 yards out. In injury time Appledore were awarded a free kick 20 yards out when James Clampin was alleged to have fouled his man, judging by both players reaction it was the Sidmouth skipper that had actually been fouled. The resultant free kick was delivered into the box and after a scramble was smashed into the net, a real kick in the teeth for the Vikings that deserved so much more on the day, however the Vikings Management will take encouragement from the improved form that has seen them only lose one of their last four games.
Final Score 3-3
