Sidmouth Town 1 – Stoke Gabriel 2

Walter C Parson Cup Saturday 14th October 2017

Sidmouth started well and after only four minutes had a chance to open the scoring, Rob Knight rounded the visiting keeper Scott Corderoy but found the side netting from a tight angle. On the 10th minute Stoke’s Nathan Hebbes came close twice in quick succession putting one into the side netting and one just wide.  Against the run of play Stoke opened the scoring on 12th minute when the referee gave a harsh hand ball decision against the Vikings Tyler Wellman who had an excellent game.  Stuart Bowker stepped up to send Josh Mclean the wrong way 0-1.  Sidmouth quickly dusted themselves down and deservedly got an equaliser when Dan Evans delivered a superb cross that was bundled home by veteran striker Shaun Densham 1-1.  Sidmouth continued to trouble the away side with the pace of Connor Swingler and Evans both asking serious questions of the away defence.  On the 35th minute Sidmouth’s skipper Ryan Davies unleased a 20-yard screamer that smashed against the visitor’s cross bar with Corderoy well beaten.  The visitors were hanging on and were fortunate to go in at halftime still in the game.

Halftime 1-1

The second half started off as a bit of a chess match with both defences playing exceptionally well.  Twenty minutes into the half Sidmouth’s Swingler went down in the penalty box after a heavy challenge but was surprised when the referee waived play on.  With 70 minutes played Bowker went down in a challenge and received lengthy treatment and was off the pitch for a good 10 minutes.  Most people in the ground were surprised to see the marksman return to the game as his reaction to the challenge was of that of someone who was seriously injured.  He finally made his way back on with a heavily strapped ankle and a pronounced limp, but was not limping when he acrobatically scored the winner on the 87th minute from a speculative overhead kick.

While both teams had players missing, last season’s league champions Stoke Gabriel were made to work hard for the win and may feel a touch fortunate to have nicked a result as the Vikings gave a good account of themselves and certainly looked better than their League Position suggested.
