Macron D&E League Div 8 Saturday 11th November 2017
Up against arguably the strongest team in division eight the young Vikings, as they do for every home match, went into another top of the table clash full of confidence.
A strong quick start from the away side found Sidmouth 2-0 down within the first ten minutes and staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat! The coaches got together and took the difficult decision of taking two young Sidmouth players off to try and change the course of the match, on came Will Ashby and the returning Jordan Parsons who joined Darren Thomas in the midfield. With the experience of Thomas helping all around him the Vikings started to fight back with some good defensive work from Ben Main, Oliver Newton, Adam Jago, and the excellent Matt Jones setting a base for the team to begin gaining the upper hand, towards the end of the first half they got their first goal back from a headed own goal which beat the keeper and rolled into an empty net .
Halftime was welcomed by the Sidmouth manager and coach Jon Miller who got to work halftime convincing the lads they could come back again from a goal down and win the match as they did the week before.
And that’s almost what they did!
Some great midfield play from Thomas and Parsons at the start of the second half and a good run from Luke Spillar got the Vikings a penalty which was converted by the excellent Ollie Turton, who then went on to score the third with a great solo strike to see Sidmouth 3-2 up with 25 minutes to go, with nearly the last kick of the game Thorverton scored an equaliser to snatch the victory from the Vikings but the belief and experience the young team took from the game has galvanised the squad even more.
Yet another impressive performance by matt skelding in goal, without the saves he made it could have been a different story.
