Budleigh Salterton 3 – Sidmouth Town 1

Carlsberg SWPL Div 1 East Saturday 26th December 2017

The Greenway Lane surface held up superbly, despite the previous day’s rain that had washed away much of the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division programme.

The opening 20 minutes saw action at either end as both sides looked to play on the front foot.  The opening goal came in the 20th minute and the architect of the goal was Budleigh midfielder George Pannell, who got around his man before pulling the ball back to a supporting Aaron Denny, who scored a goal of the season contender from 20 yards past the helpless Robbie Powell in the Sidmouth goal.  Fifteen minutes later Callum Shipton worked his way into a position to cross from the right and his well-flighted delivery was met by a clinical finish from Jordan Harris to double the home lead. Deservedly, just before the break Sidmouth Town got a goal back with Shaun Densham tucking home at the far post after a great cross from Jordan Bastin.

Halftime 2-1

Just five minutes into the second half, the home two-goal lead was restored when Denny received the ball some 25 yards from goal and advanced a few yards to create sufficient space to get his shot away and the ball arrowed its way into the net, much to the joy of most of the three figure crowd at Greenway Lane.  Sidmouth gave as good as they got for long periods of the contest with Rob Knight & Densham missing good chances.  On the 75th minute Budleigh rode their luck when substitute Riki Pitter saw his shot come back off the upright had that effort gone in it would have set the game up for a nervy finish for the Robins as it happened Budleigh retained the ball well to see out the remainder of the game.
