Firewatch Devon Senior Cup Quarter Final Saturday 10th February 2018
The Vikings are through to the Semi Final of the Devon Senior Cup after beating their Plymouth based opponents.
With Ken Mortimore working wonders to get the game on it was always going to cut up after constant rain. Town started well but the final pass was too often wayward In fact it was the visitors who went close twice when clean through, Rob Glukowski saved well in the first instance and made himself big on the second chance bravely narrowing the angle. The Vikings took the lead with a screamer from Damien Armes. At this point it’s fair to say that the away side were committing bad tackles against the young Vikings side, who did well not to react. Half time gave the management some idea how difficult it was to stand at times let alone play decent football.
An improved performance from the Vikings saw the game remain tight as chances went begging on the visitor’s goal, Scott Hughes thought he had scored the second goal only to be harshly adjudged to have been offside. However undeterred the hosts kept the momentum and Aidy Parr thundered in the second from thirty yards. Bizarrely as the pitch got worse the Vikings started playing superb football and could have added a few more as their fitness was far greater than the visitors, Tom Moore headed home at the far post after great play from Matt Salter to seal the win.
A mention for the referee who had a good game and did well to remain composed when the guests tried intimidate him
Managers Gary Bargery and Paddy Thomas were rightly proud of the players who showed spirit and determination with a gutsy display.
Next week they have no game but the week after a home game v Lapford awaits
