Torpoint Athletic 7 – Sidmouth Town 3

SWPL Premier East Division

After a busy summer preparing ourselves for a big step in the Clubs history of competing at its highest level, we made the trip to Plymouth and caught the ferry across the Tamar down to Torpoint FC who according to a few would be up in around the top 3 or 4 at the end of the season, so we knew we were going to have to be at our best!
On arrival the lads were in good spirits and keen to get on with the task!
We started the game off with a tactical plan where players had to be patient in their jobs, ensuring we didn’t concede early on! The task was met excellently as during long periods of the first half we frustrated them forcing them into mistakes enabling us to punish when we could going forward! and that’s certainly what happened when half way through the half Ben miller excellently forced the centre half into some sloppy defending enabling Fez to wonderfully put our new signing Oscar Walsh through on goal 1on1 who calmly rounding the keeper to put us 0-1 up!! Our discipline continued after our opener, Walsh always a threat also put in a defensive role for our second goal when robbing their winger on the flank threaded a ball down the line to Jack Hatswell making a great second man run from midfield, who in turn put a great first time ball across the box for Ben miller to brilliantly steer the ball first time into the top corner, 0-2!! Our defence had performed very well all first half, when what should have been half time turned into 3 minutes added time from I don’t know where, and in the final seconds of added time Torpoint were gifted a free kick which they scored after a defensive mix up seeing us go in 1-2 up!!
The second half was always going to be tougher with Torpoint at home and losing, they came out sharper second half reverting from keep ball in their own half to long balls over our back four pushing us back which gave them joy in winning lots of corners, this ended up being our down. Within 5 minutes from a corner a ball was floated inside the box and Jake in goal was blocked resulting in an equaliser, appeals to the ref we’re ignored? We didn’t let it get to us and some good work pressuring their back line again resulted in us forcing mistakes and when Fez found himself in a 3v2 situation he decided to go alone instead of passing resulting in not only another missed chance but also himself getting injured and having to come off for treatment! During this period we were slow in regrouping and from another set play got overloaded down the left where they made no mistake punishing us from that!!

Fez coming off made an impact to our game plan, we brought on Elliot Keirle to replace Fez and he worked hard for us down the left but with Torpoint now with the momentum and throwing  everything at us forcing 3 corners within a 10 minute period which resulted in us conceding another 3 goals from set play! During this time we brought off Jack Hatswell for Danny Burwood and Ethan slater for young Max Hammett to make his debut!! We still managed to create some chances and when Ollie Jarrett found himself in a 1v1 shot only for the keeper to save well before  Ollie followed up from the rebound to score and make it 6-3. Another opportunity for us saw manager Danny Burwood square the ball across the 6-yard box where a tired Ben miller couldn’t quite get there but shooting himself would’ve been the better option! A late 7th goal put even more of a dampener on our day and we look back pondering on what could’ve been! All in all some plus’s to take from the game and a lot of lessons learnt. Next up Axminster at home Wednesday night in an early derby!!
