Sidmouth Town Res 4 – Chard Town Res 0

Macron D&E League Div 1 Saturday 7th August

The Vikings second string outplayed their Somerset counterparts, who still lie above them in Division One, on a windy Saturday at Manstone. Taking the initiative right from kick off the home side were dumbstruck that a penalty wasn’t awarded for a blatant hack on Tom Moore after three minutes, only for the referee to wave play on! Undeterred the young Vikings kept the pressure on and were rewarded when Skipper Jack Hatswell swept the ball home at the far post, not content with this slender lead they piled the pressure on forcing a number of free kicks and corners which were dealt with well by the Chard defence.  On twenty-five minutes Reuben Raffell struck a superb volley that swerved away from the visiting keeper to make it 2-0. Clearly the Chard side were not being allowed to get any momentum and a few heavy challenges was their reply. An awful elbow to the face on the returning Louis Spalding went unpunished as the only person in attendance, the most important one, thought that Spalding had dived! Again, the youngsters were not intimidated, and they responded by not getting involved and let their football do the talking.

The second half was a fine disciplined performance with Matt Colson and Ben Miller dominant at the back. Ferenc Bodor struck a third with a toe punt from outside the box and Scott Hughes added another to cap a fine display from the Vikings.

A young side with 11 of the 14 under 19. They are starting to gain confidence and with improved availability then it’s hoped that standards will continue to improve. From a youthful squad the game management was fantastic, and they all played their part in a great performance.

Next week sees the Vikings begin the defence of the Devon Senior Cup. Stoke Gabriel Res are the visitors with a 2 pm ko at Manstone.
